Statistical regression to the mean, cool concept

(From my original Blogspot)

Statistical Regression is the statistical principle wherein the high scoring individuals on a pre-test tend to score lower on a subsequent test; and the low scoring individuals tend to improve. Neither case is due to a change in the test taker's skill, per se, but a process known as regression to the mean. When do we see this around us in action? When do we do this? I do it when I cook a fantastic meal one day. The next day I might not cook at all (regressing to the mean). Or if I totally ignore my kids one day, I might spend a lot more focused time with them the next (again, regression to the mean). FASCINATING CONCEPT!!
