A lesson in patience

(From my original Blogspot)

On Monday night my husband showed up after a long day of work with marshmallows and Hershey bars in hand. He knew that our youngest son had been asking for one of our 'smore fires for family home evening, and he didn't want to disappoint him.

He helped the kids light the fire and then gave us a brief lesson. He talked about the message on patience that had been given to the priesthood leaders during our last general conference. He talked about how patience is really the same as faith: it is being willing to wait and work for something. It is being willing to try and try and fail, knowing that eventually failure will become a success. It is being willing to look like a fool and feel like a fool because you know deep down that you are doing the right thing. It is believing that God knows what He is doing with your life.

I realized while I was listening to him just how faithless I am sometimes. I want things to be how I want them, NOW. I sometimes think that my intense efforts can put my world in line with my desires. And although it is true that many outcomes are dependent on my efforts, I still cannot control much of what happens. Through comparing patience to faith I was able to remember that waiting for some things is a noble trait.
